Not long ago, talented North Springs Charter High School artists relied on outside — often expensive — resources to produce audition materials to apply to prestigious music programs and career opportunities. Today, they create these materials in school and prepare for music industry careers, both in performance and production. A brand new music studio at North Springs ensures students can not only advance their musical performance aptitude, but also gain expertise in music post-production. Sandy Springs Education Force helped support the studio with a STEAM Legacy grant to North Springs.
The school recently hosted an official ribbon cutting for the studio, where all contributing organizations had the honor of opening and visiting the studio. Sandy Springs Mayor, Rusty Paul, pictured above learning about the equipment, proved he is a politician with many talents. He recorded a short track for the students to mix in the studio.
SSEF STEAM Legacy Grant “champion,” Judy Roseman explained, “The studio provides the resources for students to create their own audition CDs and gives them the opportunity to learn how to mix sound, evaluate recordings and create a final product.”
Music and chorus teacher William Van Craven, who sponsors the club that uses the studio, the “Spartan Mixers,” noted, “Today’s music world requires a complete capability of instrument mastery as well as recording in order to truly understand how music is composed, created, performed, produced and distributed. Experience in this kind of music technology will prepare students for a variety of music careers including in Georgia’s burgeoning film industry.”
Students are thrilled to have an opportunity to learn how to use the technological tools that will help launch them into musical career and educational pathways. Roseman remarked that the club is so successful, the studio is being used during lunches and before and after school. She said, “At least 35 students are using it on a regular basis.”
