Children’s Book Festival
Following the race, a brand new Children’s Book Festival is free and open to the public from 8:30-11:30 a.m.
This rain or shine program on the City Springs Green features presentations and question and answer sessions with several authors. Acclaimed guests include: Diane Z. Shore, award-winning author of 11 books and anthologies for young readers; Irene Latham, a highly decorated author of more than a dozen books for children and adults; New York Times best-selling authors Surishtha Sehgal and Kabir Sehgal; and National Geographic Kids science author Jodi Wheeler-Toppen, who wrote over 20 books for students and teachers.
$1000 Prize
Wheeler-Toppen will also provide the Sandy Springs public school with the best attendance at the free Literacy Event a grand prize of a full day of assemblies that connect the fun and excitement of science with the power of nonfiction writing. The prize-winning school will be determined based on the number of sign-ins at the event calculated as a percentage of the school’s overall population.
Participants will also have an opportunity to learn from and meet Laura Freeman, illustrator of over 20 children’s books, including Hidden Figures, a “Children’s Book All Young Georgians Should Read” for 2018. Ebony Glenn, illustrator of Mommy’s Khimar, and recipient of the 2018 Wonders of Childhood Focus Fellowship will also present at the event.
Mama Koku, of The Wren’s Nest is the featured storyteller, and Little Shop of Stories the official onsite event bookseller.
Participants at the Saturday Literacy Event will have the opportunity to celebrate reading and illustration via book signings, a book character dress-up parade, storytelling, arts and crafts and much, much more! Check out the schedule of events and more information here!
